DOES THIS PROVINCETOWN RESTAURANT DELIVER ON ITS “AMERICA’S FAVORITE FRIED CHICKEN” CLAIM?
The Cost - $14.50 per person
The Atmosphere – Open from 8 am to 2 pm, Liz’s Café offers both indoor and outdoor seating options for its guests looking for breakfast, brunch or lunch. The café is quaint and fits right inwith the rest of Provincetown.
Provincetown, located on the north side of Cape Cod, might sound familiar because of the town’s recent appearance in American Horror Story. Or it could be because its where the Pilgrims arrived on the Mayflower. Regardless, Provincetown is an amazing place to visit; the town has a rich art scene, beaches, great food and an incredible LGBTQ+ community. On a leisurely Sunday, I headed out for brunch to Liz’s Café which is located a bit off of the town’s main commercial strip.
The Order – Stack of Pancakes, America’s Favorite Fried Chicken, and a California Omelette.
The Great – All of the food! Fluffy, light, served three to an order and accompanied by sweet butter and pure Vermont maple syrup, the pancakes were delicious. The fried chicken was also excellent though “America’s Favorite” might be a bit of a stretch. The dish comes with two pieces of chicken, tasty french fries, and a small side of mayonnaise-based coleslaw which was mediocre. Finally, the California Omelette, made with egg whites, fresh avocado, cherry tomatoes, and goat cheese, was nicely done. While I wish it had more goat cheese in it, the dish did have a lot of avocado. The omelette is normally served with a side of toast and potatoes but I substituted a bowl of fresh fruit instead; it was well worth the $3 up charge as the bowl was large and came with a great mix of berries and melon.
The Not So Great – Liz’s is a popular place so be prepared to wait upwards of an hour to get a table. Also, super uncharacteristic of Provincetown, the service was not very good – slow and not friendly (to be kind).
The Verdict – Despite the wait and the poor service, Liz’s Café was a great experience. With both healthy and unhealthy options on the menu, there is something for everyone and it doesn’t get much better than eating great food outdoors during the summer in Provincetown.
