KEBABGY: AUTHENTIC EGYPTIAN CUISINE ON THE NILE RIVER

The Cost - $22 per person

The Atmosphere – Hotel restaurant dining areas usually bore me but Kebabgy is beautifully set right on the Nile river. The restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating but you should absolutely get a table right on the river’s edge if the weather is nice.

Cairo, Egypt’s modern-day capital, is one of Africa's most densely populated cities with about 21 million people residing in its metropolitan area. The Nile River runs through the middle of the city which boasts a mix of ancient and modern architecture and a lot of Mediterranean and Oriental cuisine. I wanted to make sure I got a sufficient amount of Egyptian food on my trip so I went to dinner at Kebabgy Oriental Grill, a high end restaurant located in Cairo’s Sofitel Hotel.

The Order – Walnut Mutable, Mouloukhia, Hawashi, and Kebab & Kofta.

The Great –Made with charcoal-grilled eggplant, tahini, olive oil, and crushed walnuts, the smooth textured Walnut Mutable dip was delectable. The combination of the eggplant and the walnuts gave the dip a great flavor and was a great way to start the meal. The Hawashi, Egyptian Baladi (whole wheat flatbread) stuffed with marinated minced meat and onions, was another great appetizer. The bread was soft, and the meat and onions were flavorful; I was a big fan of this traditional dish.

The Good – Mouloukhia (also Molokhia or Mulukhiya) is an Egyptian staple. The ancient Egyptian green soup, made from jute mallow leaves cooked in chicken broth with coriander and garlic, had a very unique flavor. It is rare to find Mouloukhia outside of Egypt, so I highly recommend trying it here. The Kebab & Kofta, a mix of typically grilled chicken and lamb, was very good. A large portion served on a tabletop grill, the dish was well-presented and tasty and is what the restaurant is most known for.

The Verdict – Egyptian cuisine has some unique and traditional dishes and it is important to try them. Kebabgy offers a great opportunity to do just that in a spectacular setting. I definitely recommend having a meal at Kebabgy and, while there, think about the amazing history of Egypt as you take in the amazing views of the Nile.
