SOBREMESA: AN ICE CREAM SHOP THAT’S WORTH A VISIT IN ANTIGUA, GUATEMALA
The Cost -$3 each
The Atmosphere –There isn’t much to say about the atmosphere at Sobremesa because it is a very small, hole-in-the-wall type ice cream shop. The available flavors are written on a couple of boards that hang over the back wall and the décor is not really anything to write home about. Because it is so small, there isn’t much in terms of seating with the shop offering one small bench that can fit two people. Despite all that, the atmosphere isn’t why you come to Sobremesa. However, if you want a more comfortable, sit-down experience, you can head around to the Sobremesa owner’s full restaurant bearing the same name which also serves Sobremesa ice cream though with more limited offerings.
Describing itself as an “exotic” ice cream shop, Sobremesa has put itself on the map in the charming city of Antigua, Guatemala with its homemade ice creams that often contain unique flavors or flavor combinations. It offers around forty different flavors to choose from that range in levels of exoticness from something more common like peanut butter chocolate to something you probably have never seen before like strawberry parmesan. The ingredients used are natural which really sets the shop apart from its competitors and each flavor is already portioned out into individual servings. We checked out Sobremesa and ordered a few different flavors to get a taste of what the shop has to offer.
The Order – Ritia, Pistachio Cardamom, and Peanut Curry.
The Fantastic – The best flavor was the most exotic one that was ordered, the Peanut Curry. Let’s start by saying this: if you don’t like curry, you will not like this flavor. The curry flavor was strong and delicious. The ice cream had a very nice peanut flavor as well. Mixed in were chocolate chips which added some texture and sweetness. The peanut curry was an incredibly well done example of one of Sobremesa’s more exotic flavors and a great show of why the shop is worth a visit.
The Great – If we were going from most exotic to least exotic, the Ritia would be next up. The flavor, which has a roasted strawberry base with basil and black pepper, is named after the owner’s wife and is a mainstay on the menu. The roasted strawberry flavor was very elegant and brought a high level of sophistication to the ice cream while the black pepper gave a small kick to the end of each bite, leaving your tongue a bit tingly. The Ritia is a nice option for anyone who likes strawberry ice cream but wants something a little more unique.
The Pistachio Cardamom might have been the least exotic of the three, but it certainly did not disappoint. With bits of pistachio and cardamom mixed in, the ice cream got bursts of the respective flavor each time you bit into one of the pieces. The result was a nice play on the traditional pistachio ice cream that was a delight to eat.
The Verdict – A trip to Antigua would not be complete without a stop at Sobremesa for some ice cream. While we highly recommend the Peanut Curry, you really can’t seem to go wrong with the flavors that Sobremesa offers. So whether you are grabbing it from their ice cream shop or eating it inside at their restaurant, head over and get yourself a cup or two to enjoy.
