SAFARI COMEDOR: THE GOOD AND THE MOSTLY BAD AT THIS EATER FEATURED SPOT
The Cost - $22 per person
The Atmosphere – Mexican Shabby Chic décor with both indoor and outdoor seating.
My first big dinner in Tulum was, well, eh. But hey, at least I’m honest. I found Safari Comedor on Eater’s 18 Essential Places to Eat in Tulum so I naturally thought it would be good.
The Order - I couldn’t decide between all of the tacos so I got one of each of them (Pork Pastor, Crispy Fish, Pollo al Limon, Nopal & Mushrooms, Shrimp Molé Verde, and Pescado a La Plancha) plus I had to get the Esquites (corn with cotija cheese, epazote, and smoky mayo) and the Ceviche Tostadas, which are “cooked” with grapefruit and lime and mixed with habanero peppers, cilantro sprouts, and passion fruit mayo. And to drink, I ordered a spicy margarita.
The Good - The Shrimp Molé Verde taco was by far the best dish and was quite good (that green molé is delicious). The esquites, the ceviche tostada, and the chicken and lime taco were solid.⠀⠀⠀
The Bad - The spicy margarita was not good and was definitely not the way I wanted to start the meal. I generally hate leaving alcohol behind at the end of a meal but I ended up drinking no more than 1/4 of this cocktail. On the food side, the nopal (cactus) and the mushroom taco were basic and not flavorful and weren’t even fixable by pouring salsa on them.
The Verdict - Not a bad value at $22 per person (in the touristy area of Tulum) but Tulum certainly has a lot more to offer.⠀
