ROUX: HIGH END MEDITERRANEAN STYLE CUISINE IN BUENOS AIRES

The Cost - $34 per person

The Atmosphere – The restaurant is a white tablecloth restaurant but it isn’t super formal. It’s interior is on the simpler side and doesn’t try to be chic or trendy.

I love trying newly opened restaurants but feel that it’s just as important to patron restaurants that have been delighting customers for years. That’s why I decided to dine at Roux, where chef Martín Rebaudino has been serving up beautiful Mediterranean style cuisine for years.

The Order - Mollejas (Sweetbreads), Quinoa Crusted Fish of the Day, Cuchinillo (Suckling Pig), and a Biscuit with Sabayonne ice cream for dessert. A bottle of ColoméTorrontes to drink.

The Great - The mollejas was definitely the best dish of the night. Mixed with mushrooms and served with a single, large ravioli filled with truffled egg yolk in a foam, this was by far the most creatively and beautifully prepared sweetbreads I have ever had and the ravioli was absolutely delicious. Not far behind though was the quinoa crusted sea bass which was artistically presented and served with a cauliflower purée, gnocchi and grilled calamari. The fish was well prepared and the calamari was a really nice touch. I also must say that the Colométorrontes, an Argentinian wine from the Salta region, tasted great and was an amazing value at about $15 for the bottle.

The Good - The Cuchinillo was a good dish served over a sweet potato purée. The meat was well cooked and the dish was also beautifully presented (a common theme among the plates in this meal). The dessert was good but I didn’t love the biscuit, which had dulce de leche, an Argentinian staple, drizzled around. The sabayonne ice cream was very good though and the chocolate, mascarpone and walnuts were welcome additions.

The Verdict - Chef Rebaudino proved why he and Roux have had continued success in the crowded Buenos Aires restaurant scene. At $34 per person with wine, this meal is a great value for a wonderful dining experience.
